Art as a form of communication

Have you ever tried to explain something to someone and then use a pencil or marker to draw illustrations in order deliver the brunt of your explanation? I've seen it used as an effective form of communication, especially in a work place.

I am definitely one that tends to encompasses a current mood or thought in a photograph, the benefit of this is it really reminds me of various periods of my own life, where specific details can bring a smile to my face or a shiver down my spine.

I do like to try to leave it "open" however, so the viewer can develop their own spin or gist from an image. Being impartial is important to me, both as an artist and a person, I find that its far to easy to judge art, or even just people in general; when we do this we lose out, we lose out on the opportunity of something that can actually enhance our lives. Leaving it open, also means it reaches a wider audience, and can hold a deeper interest or intrigue.

Thinking back to when we were children we were all artists, enjoying to draw, cut, glue and colour but somehow most people stop making art. Yet looking at how children created art, they actually used it as a form of expression ; what they were thinking or feeling or looking forward to, or about an enjoyable experience, sometimes they included people they loved, or even those who they hated.

I've come to realize how much a necessity art really is, art is bigger than all of us, bigger than any famous artist...it allows us as human beings to create, share and experience what being human actually is.

Tonight one of my prints will actually be up during the Crossborder Collection Vernissage, an event that will benefit the Stephen Lewis Foundation, and african hiv initiative.

I feel very proud, because I support the cause and I'm happy to be a small part of helping it out. I'm also proud, because I now have come to accept myself more than I probably ever have in the past, and I've come to love creating art that has been surprisingly fulfilling. Choosing one image for this wasn't easy, but looking at it from a perspective that there lies opportunities for even more to be chosen in the future, inspires me greatly.

This is the print I chose.

Now since this post is all about Art as communication, I think it be fitting to leave it with some random silly shots that I took with my Iphone. Art with my Iphone was an idea I came up while coming back from Europe in the fall of 09. I'm using 2 Mega-Pixel rotten lens but what I'm actually doing is focusing on my composition, it actually became an exercise...part of the process of being creative, is also being creative on how to improve.
