The importance of insiginficance

Ok, it's time to change the tempo of this blog a little, I wanted it to be a creative reservoir and it’s turning out to be a bit of a creative dump instead, but I think that mainly has to do with other priorities that I have been focusing on.

Yesterdays blog annoys me, I guess I was tired when I wrote it, I felt I had something to say and wasn't sure how to say it. I think in some ways I've reached the same point in my photography and need to change things up again, and take more risks. Come to think about it, this is probably something I need to do with other aspects of my life and not just photography.

So, time for a shift.

Ever look at something over and over again and one day, out of the blue, you suddenly realize something different about it?

It happens to me when I am looking at a photograph or a familiar scene, I feel a connection with it, everytime I look at it I happen to like what I see and sometimes I’m not even sure why. I’m convinced that this is a barrier, probably built by human condition or perhaps unnoticed due to mental or physical distraction.

What this notion leads me to believe is appreciating art goes beyond what is visual, I mentioned this before when I indicated that sometimes; to really see a photograph, you have to close your eyes. Perhaps viewing art is more intuitive, or tied into other factors of our being, be it emotional, spiritual, or some other sense or aspect that has yet to be discovered. Art has virtually existed since the beginning of time as a form of expression; I don’t think we realize how much creativity is behind innovation and progress in everything we do.

I used to see barriers as a shameful nuisance, perhaps a by-product of my lack of intelligence, confidence or inability to fully process. What I would like to do, is see it as more of challenge. A way to better myself and stop accepting what the status quo is for either getting it or not getting it. I think we either get it because art in itself is truthful. Subjectivity is the catch word of all art, yet why people like “stuff” and others don’t has to do with the objectivity of both the artist and the viewer. It’s a relationship like anything else, and there is either a connection in that relationship or there isn’t. Not to say that everything that an artist does has to be liked by the same people. Everyone should venture into the unknown to try new insignificant things, and when they do.... it is either going to be a hit or a miss…It doesn’t mean we don’t try, and it certainly doesn’t mean we should penalize people or ourselves for missing either.

I’m starting to comprehend why artists need to be arrogant, why they need to be thick skinned, in order to ride the wave of uncertainty it is a component that is required for artistic survival. You have to visually conquer the world in your mind before you can physically do it, determination is probably the most important trait one will need... if they attempt to actually try, but reality will decide if they succeed or fail.
